Fletcher, R. D. (University of Connecticut, Storrs), and W. N. Plastridge. Gaseous environment and growth of microaerophilic vibrios. J. Bacteriol. 87:352-355. 1964.-Strains of microaerophilic vibrios from cattle, chickens, man, and sheep were placed in four groups on the basis of catalase and H(2)S production and glycine tolerance. By these tests group I was + - -, group II was + - +, group III was + + +, and group IV was - + +. On yeast extract-agar, the optimal oxygen level was 2.5% for group I, and 5.0% for the other three groups; the optimal carbon dioxide level was 10% for all four groups; the group I strains from man and sheep and the group II strains differed from the group I strains from cattle, by tolerating higher levels of both oxygen and carbon dioxide. On a chemically defined medium, the optimal oxygen level was 1.0%, and the optimal carbon dioxide level was 10% for groups I and II; the group II strains were more sensitive to high levels of carbon dioxide than were group I strains from cattle.

Evaluating 3 gas-delivery systems for culturing Campylobacter jejuni in a microaerophilic environment.

Campylobacter spp. require a microaerophilic environment (80% N(2), 10% CO(2), 5% H(2), and 5% O(2)) for growth. Since the late 1800s, several systems for creating and maintaining specific microbial atmospheres have been developed and applied. The objective of this study was to evaluate Campylobacter jejuni growth by means of 3 commonly used gas-delivery systems for generating a microaerophilic...

Occurrence of Pathogenic Vibrios in Coastal Areas of Golestan Province in Iran

This study was carried out to investigate the occurrence of potentially pathogenic species of vibrio in sea water and estuarine environments of the Caspian Sea in the Golestan province of Iran. A total of 127 water samples from coastal waters as well as from river and estuaries were collected and analyzed by culture, during April and September 2001. Following prompt centrifugation, the resusp...

Determination of nitrate utilization efficiency of selective strain of Bacillus sp. isolated from Eutrophic Lake, Theerthamkara, Kasaragod, Kerala

Nitrate pollutants increase the growth of algal bloom, resulting in fresh water eutrophication. The high nitrogen level in wastewater has become a growing concern, which has risen the necessity to develop efficient nitrogen removal techniques. Biological denitrification, which is the reduction of oxidized nitrogen compounds like nitrate or nitrite to gaseous nitrogen compounds, is the most impo...

Analysis of expression of toxin-coregulated pili in classical and El Tor Vibrio cholerae O1 in vitro and in vivo.

The expression of toxin-coregulated pili (TCP) and their structural subunit TcpA was compared in 20 strains of Vibrio cholerae of the classical and El Tor biotypes. Bacteria were isolated from the intestines of rabbits with experimental cholera and compared with the same strains grown under optimal TCP expression conditions in vitro. Immunoblotting revealed that TcpA production was induced in b...
